How to reduce energy costs in food logistics?

In today's world, it is more important than ever to reduce energy costs in food logistics. The cost of energy is constantly rising and companies need to look at new ways to reduce their logistics costs. The environmental impact of food transportation can also be reduced by taking energy efficiency measures. In this blog post, we explore different ways to reduce energy costs in food logistics.

why are energy saving measures so important?

The logistics industry has made tremendous progress in recent years, but at the same time spending on energy has increased sharply. This is mainly because more and more supply chains are globalized and companies need to transport more goods to meet the increasing demand for food. With rising energy prices, this means that companies have to spend more money on transportation. It is therefore important that companies take effective measures to reduce energy costs in food logistics.

Another reason why energy savings in food logistics are so important is that food transportation is a major burden on the environment. Food transportation consumes both fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. By conserving energy, companies can help reduce the environmental impact of food transportation.

There are many different methods that companies can use to save energy. First, companies should ensure that all vehicles and machinery are regularly serviced and maintained. This not only helps to increase the efficiency of operations, but also to reduce fuel consumption. In addition, companies can consider alternative fuel sources such as electric vehicles or biodiesel. Technology in these areas is changing almost daily, so it's always worth a look.

Companies can also use more energy-efficient packaging materials to reduce the energy required for shipping. In addition, companies can use intelligent warehouse management techniques to reduce the number of tours, which in turn reduces fuel consumption. Finally, companies can use innovative technologies to optimize their logistics processes and thus reduce energy costs.

Our product is a fully automated truck bed cleaning system. This consists of a loading ramp-like base station, which the truck approaches, and a robot that performs the cleaning. The entire setup including the docked truck only needs the length of a truck parking space + 3 meters of space. Cleaning is certified more thorough, more than twice as fast and sustainable (75% less water, 90% less chemicals, 60% less energy) due to full automation.

However, not only the physical product, but also the ecosystem is part of the product: The machine is connected to a cloud that reaches directly into the TMS/ERP of the forwarder. This allows cleaning slots to be allocated perfectly according to route planning, certificates to be played into the system and full service to be guaranteed. The 24/7 full service includes predictive maintenance and chemical replenishment. This is billed through the pay-per-wash model, where the operator pays a small fee per wash to KATMA CleanControl.

Apart from KATMA CleanControl, there are many other technology solutions that companies can use to reduce energy costs in food logistics. For example, companies can use GPS-based systems to determine exactly where vehicles are and where they are headed. This allows users to avoid unnecessary trips and thus save fuel.

There are also special sensors and devices that allow users to measure and analyze fuel consumption. Such systems help users detect poorly running engines or inaccurate routes and take immediate remedial action. In addition, companies can use other cloud-based systems to automate their logistics processes and thus save time and resources.

Last but not least, more intelligent route planning can also save empty runs and thus unnecessary fuel and working time.

There are a variety of funding programs that can help companies implement energy-efficient measures. Nationwide, the "Energy Efficiency in SMEs" program offers financial grants and consulting services. At the state level, there are many different programs that may vary by region. There are also specialized programs such as the "KfW Efficiency House" or the "KfW Energy Saving Check". It is important to note that each program must meet certain requirements to be eligible. It is therefore advisable to find out about the respective conditions in advance in order to find out which program is most suitable.

how much money can companies save through energy-saving measures?

Effective energy-saving measures in food logistics can save companies a considerable amount of money. It is difficult to say exactly how much can be saved, as every company has different requirements. However, studies show that companies can save up to 15% in costs per ton kilometer by implementing energy-efficient technologies. Therefore, it is definitely worthwhile to make investments in energy-efficient technologies. KATMA CleanControl saves an additional 60% of energy compared to manual cleaning.

Energy cost reduction is an important part of the modern logistics industry and it is important that companies take effective measures to reduce their logistics costs. There are many different methods companies can use to save energy, from using alternative fuel sources to using smart technologies like KATMA CleanControl.
